First Kicks (for those turning 4, 5 or 6 this year)
The First Kicks programme is a great introduction to football for those turning 4, 5 or 6 within the calendar year.
The programme runs at Monrad Park, Highbury, on Friday evenings from 4.00-5.00pm during term 2 and half of term 3. Each session runs for about 1 hour and we have the use of the floodlights there when it gets dark, earlier which are really great to play under. |
We have modified our First Kicks programme to cater for children of all footballing experience, ability and confidence. We play a number of group games and when appropriate split into pods to play smaller group games. At the end of each session some children are keen to play a match and are split into teams for them to do this.
Some children are not confident enough to play a match and other activities are continued for them to continue having fun.
Parents are allowed to be on the pitch, if necessary, to hold hands with the less confident players.
To ensure an effective programme, we will be limiting the number of First Kicks registrations to 50 this season.
The whole emphasis of First Kicks is to introduce new skills to children in a fun environment which they are all keen to return to.
The programme has been devised by New Zealand Football as part of their "Whole of Football Plan" and has been modified by our experienced coach, Adam Rose, who runs Fun Football for the Little People.
Who runs the programme?
We have a First Kicks coordinator, Adam Rose (from Fun Football for the Little People), who will be running the programme with the help of some young coaches who have been through the junior club, as well as parent volunteers. Some parents are happy to put their hands up to help each week, which is really helpful. If we do not have enough volunteers we may from time to time ask for some assistance. The games are very basic and easy to understand and a football background is not necessary to run a fun, worthwhile session.
